Latin Datura
Datura or Angel's Trumpet as it is commonly known, is hard not to fall in love with. This South American native grows rapidly and supplies a steady flow of stunning white trumpet flowers throughout the growing season. The soft upright branching will display loads of flowers in raised beds, in ground beds and even in pots until nighttime temperatures fall below 5 degrees. Datura is a plant that is beautiful but it is toxic if ingested to humans and animals. Most people don't eat their plants so this is usually ok but if you have an animal that loves to eat your plants avoid this one.
Growing Angel's Trumpet from seed is very easy. It will grow in almost any soil that has drainage and is in the sun. You will often see these around landfills, ditches and other less than ideal places. It is an annual in almost all spots of Canada but it will self seed quite easily unless you remove flowers continuously. This is one flower that you can start early if you would like to get a head start but it will easily grow if directly seeded into your flower beds. Ensure that you do so after last frost though as it is very frost sensitive.
